      Camp Kalahari

A Safari Oasis Amid the Vast Desert

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve extends over 20,000 square miles, set aside in 1961 as a haven for the Bushmen in which they can continue their traditional lifestyle of hunting and gathering from the desert. The reserve and empty lands around it support tens of thousands of desert antelope – gemsbok and springbuck – lions, leopard and cheetah. The northeastern region of the Kalahari Basin contains the Makgadikgadi Pans – this huge expanse of pristine, sugary-white landscape is bigger than Switzerland. Once a large river-fed lake, the Makgadikgadi Pans now lie saline and empty. The pans are littered with stone tools and artifacts dated from between 2,000 to 500,000 years old. During the wet season 35-75,000 zebra and wildebeest migrate into the area with regular sightings of lion, cheetah and other predators which follow in their wake. This is southern Africa’s last surviving zebra and wildebeest migration. Hundreds of thousands of flamingo appear from nowhere to feed as long as the water lasts. Also, the pans serve as a permanent haven for desert species such as the elusive brown hyaena, the third rarest carnivore in the world. During the dry season, ride quad bike across the lunar expanse of the salt pans and lie out on the salt pans as the sun sets, and watch the planetarium show unfold with horizon-to-horizon stars. The family-friendly camp features twelve comfortable en-suite Meru tents, a traditional thatch library, living and dining area and fresh and tasty home-style menus. Other amenities include a plunge pool with deck. There is no electricity in camp, but camera charging facilities are provided. There are many varied activities available depending on the season. Get up close and personal with the group of meerkats that was filmed for the No.1 Ladies’ Detectives Agency. Spend time walking with a group of Zu’hoasi Bushmen for a glimpse into their ancient culture. Visit Chapman’s Baobab, the third largest tree in Africa.
