      Mashatu Tent Camp

      The Land of the Giants

Mashatu Game Reserve boasts 75,000 acres of pristine game land located in southeastern Botswana, at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers. From the moment guests arrive at Mashatu, it lives up to its reputation as an adventure safari experience. The finest predator viewing in Botswana, the large habituated herds of wild elephants, the numerous adventure activities conducted throughout the reserve and the superlative photographic experience, make Mashatu the perfect destination for multi-generational families, adventure junkies, photographers and honeymoon couples. Mashatu lends itself to adventure activities due to its semi-desert environment on the eastern fringes of the Kalahari but these are complimented by a diverse topography comprising sandstone buttresses, meandering rivers, wide-open plains and riverine forests. Traversing the vast elephant trails of Mashatu on foot, mountain bike or horseback and encountering a breeding herd of 200 elephants or one of the many predators, create moments of a lifetime for a guest, but occur daily at Mashatu.   For photographers, the excellent wildlife density and diversity of Mashatu lends itself to spectacular photographs and the professional photographic guides are available to mentor guests who have these interests. A high photographic ‘hit rate’ is a regular observation of photographers visiting Mashatu. This hit rate is made possible by Mashatu’s sparse Kalahari vegetation, a very low annual rainfall and excellent diversity of wildlife. This aridness lends itself to unhindered daily views of the animals, including the illusive predators. Sightings of the ‘hunt’ and ‘kill’ are not uncommon on Mashatu. Complimenting this is the enchanting ‘Tuli’ evening light as sun sets through the dusty Kalahari Desert, providing soft optimum light for wildlife images. The underground photographic hide is situated within a few feet of a waterhole and has resulted in many international awards for wildlife photographers who visit Mashatu for their photograph of a lifetime. The camp provides eight completely private, comfortable tents, tucked under the branches of enormous trees, accessible via meandering pathways. The tents themselves are spacious and comfortable. Each unit is mounted on a concrete platform and has its own private outdoor en-suite facilities. Instant camaraderie is a by-product of this characteristic camp. Meals are shared without pomp and ceremony, either in the open-air thatched gazebo or in the boma (an outdoor, reed enclosed area) overlooking the waterhole. A plunge pool provides a refreshing break from the unrelenting sunshine, typical in summer months. In addition to morning and evening game drives, Mashatu provides numerous specialized activities available at an additional cost. Guests are encouraged to book additional activities in advance to avoid disappointment.
