      Matemwe Lodge

Idylic White Sand Beaches in a Fishing Village

For a thousand years, Zanzibar was one of the world’s crossroads of trade, with Persians, Arabs and Europeans attracted to its exotic exports. The north east section of Zanzibar Island is known as Matemwe, famous for its fine white sand beaches, the contrasting colors of the Indian Ocean and the beauty of the coral reef around Mnemba Island. Matemwe borders a small fishing village where local fishermen set out on a daily basis in traditional dhows. One of very few boutique lodges on the north coast of Zanzibar, Matemwe Lodge has perfected the island paradise experience. Offering superb diving and snorkeling, the stretch of beach alongside the lodge is shared only with the neighboring fishing village. Matemwe’s secluded location makes it an ideal place to unwind. Fresh seafood, refreshing cocktails and relaxing massages are just some of the laid back daily routines of Matemwe’s guests. The lodge consists of 12 beautiful bungalows, built from local materials and surrounded by lush gardens. The white-washed stone bungalows are spacious and comfortable, with interesting items dotted around such as a Bao board (a traditional Zanzibari game) and colorful throws over the bed. Each bungalow provides 3-pin UK-style electric sockets, a solar-powered hot-water system, retractable mosquito nets, large Zanzibari safe box, private veranda with a hammock and couch overlooking the Indian Ocean. The en-suite bathroom is large with deep bathtub and walk-in shower. The open air restaurant and lounge area overlooks the ocean. Seafood is a specialty of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Matemwe has a multi-level swimming pool surrounded by lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Optional activities such as snorkeling/diving, kayaking, sailing, and touring Stone Town, the Jozani Forest, or Prison Island as well as the Spice Tours can be arranged at an additional cost. Please advise if you are interested in additional activities and we will confirm availability and pricing.
