The Congo Basin of Central Africa is massive. It is the second largest rainforest in the world and home to thousands of lowland mountain gorillas, forest elephant, and rare bonobo chimpanzees. Most of the Congo Basin is not currently accessible, but there are some hidden gems we have uncovered over the years. One of our favorite destinations of all time is Dzanga-Sangha National Park. It is located in the extreme south of the Central African Republic (CAR) and it is magical. Here you can explore the rainforest with the charismatic BaAka (pygmies). They will show you forest elephant, beautiful and rare bongo antelope, flocks of African grey parrots, and lowland gorillas. Next door is the Odzala National Park in Congo Brazzaville, with two new safari camps that opened in 2012. Lomako Yokokala Faunal Reserve nearby in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is where (very) adventurous travelers can see one of the most rare animals on earth – the bonobo chimpanzee.
